The Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM) is the fourth largest research institute of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the largest dedicated to marine research. Under the motto “Ocean Science for a Healthy Planet,” the ICM conducts frontier research and foster both knowledge and technology transfer on topics related to ocean and climate interactions, conservation and sustainable use of marine life and ecosystems, and impact mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards.

We are addresing with you as İZENERJİ, the subsidiary company of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality authorized within the scope of EU Missions. İZENERJİ is the contact point of the EU Climate Neutral and Smart Cities, Adaptation to Climate Change Mission and Restore our Ocean and Waters Mission on behalf of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality was involved in the 'Izmir Gulf & Seferihisar Akarca Bay Oceanographic Monitoring' action as a signatory of the Ocean Mission Charter. Within the scope of the action, in line with the aim of making Izmir Bay swimmable again, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality İZSU General Directorate is observing the improvement in the water with the Izmir Bay Oceanographic Monitoring Project carried out with the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). The project measures physical, chemical, biological and microbiological quality in water, as the first system in Turkey to monitor water quality through observation and modeling. In this way, changes in water and ecological developments can be controlled. In addition, underwater imaging is performed and the effects of treatment facilities on their areas are observed.

İZENERJİ aims to contribute with great ambition to İzmir Metropolitan Municipality's vision on climate-friendly policies. İZENERJİ is the human resources company of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and consists of units focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency, water resources application and research, wastewater treatment and restoration, and EU projects.

In addition, İZENERJİ is responsible for the coordination of the Global Climate Community İzmir, which was established to organize multi-stakeholder and citizen participation within the scope of EU missions. As a first step, the Global Climate Community Izmir focused on the Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission. In the future, GCC Izmir is planned to cover all EU Missions.

We are aware of how important it is to create a strong synergy between the Missions offered by the European Commission. For this reason, we started to follow the processes of 5 EU Missions. We aim to turn İzmir into one of the living laboratories that creates a strong synergy between EU Missions.

I research and support participatory frameworks to include European coastal communities in the management, protection, and restoration of their ocean resources and ecosystems. I take part in multiple Mission Ocean-funded projects, specialising in citizen and stakeholder engagement, network building, and engaging with Mission Ocean and a social and political as well as ecological project.
