The University of the Algarve (UAlg) is a public higher education institution, founded in 1979, where the applied sciences-polytechnics and research university education systems coexist; it is located in the southern region of Portugal, specifically in the Algarve. With over 10,000 students enrolled for the 2023/24 academic year, about 25% of the registered students are international, from more than 100 different countries, and approximately 1200 staff (teachers, employees, and researchers). UAlg's educational offer consists of 1st cycle courses- bach (46) taught in Portuguese; 2nd cycle courses- master (56) taught in Portuguese and English, of which 5 are Erasmus Mundus Joint International Master's Courses; and 3rd cycle programs- Ph.D (19 Ph.D.'s) in different scientific areas - Science and Technology, Management and Economics, Marine and Earth Sciences, Social Sciences and, Health and Well-being. UAlg research projects, international cooperation and mobility projects aim to develop innovative and entrepreneurial ideas in line with the principles of the UN Agenda 2030. At the same time, since 2017, UAlg has regularly appeared in several international rankings that evaluate higher education and research, and it stands out in several areas of knowledge (tourism, oceanography, health and heritage, and archaeology). According to the Times Higher Education (THE), UAlg has always received the best ranking in the internationalization pillar in Portugal. In THE Impact Rankings, which evaluates at a global level the performance of universities in relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UAlg was ranked among the first 200 HEIs in 2023 in SDG 2- Zero hunger, 4- Quality of education, 5- Gender equality, 12- Responsible production and consumption, 13- Climate action, 14&15- Life underwater and on land, and 16- Peace, justice and strong institutions
UAlg has been an active participant in the Erasmus programs since 1993, holding a recently approved Erasmus Charter (ECHE); it stands out for its vast experience in coordinating several projects such as the Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, being the first university in Portugal to coordinate a Master of this type (European Joint Master in Water and Coastal Management, 2004); it participates in several consortia and projects such as the International Credit Mobility (JAIMES, Merging Voices, Mare Nostrum, UALG Alliances), in addition to several strategic partnerships and several capacity building projects. For UAlg, it is a commitment, a challenge, and a fundamental investment to integrate Erasmus+ mobility and cooperation projects, which contribute significantly to the promotion of internationalization and the creation of new cooperation networks, both at the academic level and at the national level, enabling them to empower higher education institutions and their beneficiaries by making them more open to sensitive issues such as European citizenship, inclusion and diversity, the development of new skills, among others.
Since 2023, UAlg is a proud member of the European University of the Seas Alliance (SEA-EU 2.9 project), navigating towards a modern and co-transformative inter-campus life; people-driven, planet-friendly and knowledge-based progress for all. The most ambitious goal of SEA-EU is to intensify physical, virtual, or hybrid mobility to enable students and staff to carry out part of their academic pathways, training and networking activities, including JOIN programs at undergraduate, masters, and Ph.D. levels, internships and Blended Intensive Programs (BIP), in the 9 European universities or in their associated partners, research centres, companies and public institutions
In 2022, UAlg was awarded the "Gold" certification in the "Healthy Campus" program by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). UAlg is also deeply committed to sustainability in all its dimensions, environmental, social and economic, and actively contributes to solving societal challenges through research, education and innovation in a rapidly changing world, with a particular focus on the Algarve region, but also building bridges with the rest of the world, including developing countries.
University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is a leader in diverse blue research fields, encompassing marine biology and restoration, nature-based solutions, blue economy, maritime safety and health, law of the sea, maritime technology and digital solutions. SDU adopts a multidisciplinary approach, emphasising community-driven strategies and citizen science. By partnering with local stakeholders and authorities, the university ensures effective management, governance, and informed decision-making. SDU commits to ensuring sustainable use of a healthy sea and is a key partner in the Danish Mission Ocean hub, together with the Danish Ministry of Research and Higher Education.

Vetik is developing biorefinery in order to start the production of different type of products from local red seaweed. In the first stage the material will be wildharvested, however we have started collaborations thowards setting up the cultivation processes.

Wavemakers United is a global impact community with a passion for water, agrifood, and renewable energy innovation. As a youth organization, we focus on local challenges while having a global reach. Our aim is to contribute to the UN SDGs and involve as many youngsters as possible.
Wittrup's interest and focus is to rebuild the polluted ecosystem by mainly using mussels as a cleaning filter for the waters. In this way the plants could re-grow and re-build the ecosystem.
Wittrup Seafood is partner of the EU funded project (I3 Instrument) called Bultic Muppets. Wittrup's is also developing 100% submerge under the water mussels farm which is protected from the ice without a visual impact.
